Renting your first anonymous VPS: the complete walkthrough

From zero to a running server with no ID submitted — account creation, funding with Monero, deployment, first login and the hardening you should not skip.

This is the whole first-run flow in order, with nothing skipped and nothing assumed. You will create an account, fund it with crypto, deploy a server, log in for the first time, and lock it down. If you have never rented a VPS before, this is the page to read top to bottom.

Step 1 — create the account

Email, password, done. There is no name field, no company, no ID, no card verification. Use an address you can receive mail on but that is not your primary identity-linked one — if you already have an alias, this is a good moment to start using it.

Note · Your email and password are the only keys to the account. There is no password-reset-by-card fallback, so store the credentials in a password manager before you proceed.

Step 2 — pick the plan

Choose against your actual workload, not the biggest tier. Wisp at $6 handles a VPN endpoint or a small bot; Pulse at $10 is a solid small server; Umbra at $15 is the workhorse most people land on; Nocturne at $25 is where memory stops being the constraint. All plans include unmetered bandwidth, an IPv4 and an IPv6.

  • ▹Just a VPN or a relay → Wisp.
  • ▹A couple of small self-hosted services → Pulse.
  • ▹A Docker stack, personal mail, or a small local model → Umbra.
  • ▹A blockchain node or heavier services → Nocturne, or a dedicated server from $89.

Step 3 — fund the balance

Top up with crypto; the balance is prepaid and debited per cycle. Monero is the privacy default, but USDT, USDC, BTC, LTC, ETH, SOL and TRX all work and credit the same USD balance. The usual sequence is: copy the deposit address for your chosen coin, send from a wallet you control, and wait for confirmation — usually under ten minutes for Monero, seconds for most stablecoin networks.

Note · Send only the coin and network you selected. A USDT transfer on the wrong network is the single most common way to lose a deposit, and recovery is not guaranteed.

Step 4 — deploy

Pick your OS — Debian, Ubuntu and AlmaLinux are available across several versions — and deploy. The server is provisioned within a minute or two. You will get an IP address and a root credential; this is the moment to switch to key-based SSH before you do anything else.

Step 5 — first login and immediate hardening

This is where most first-time servers get compromised: someone else finds the password-only SSH port before you have secured it. Do these in order, immediately.

  1. 01.Generate an SSH key pair on your machine if you have not already.
  2. 02.Copy the public key to the server's authorized_keys.
  3. 03.Set PermitRootLogin to prohibit-password and PasswordAuthentication to no.
  4. 04.Reload SSH, open a second terminal, and confirm key login works before closing the first session.
  5. 05.Install unattended security updates and a firewall.

The SSH hardening guide covers each step with the exact config. Do not skip the confirmation step — a lockout on your only server is a bad first-day story.

Step 6 — put something useful on it

A fresh server is a blank slate. Common first projects: a reverse proxy in front of a self-hosted app, a WireGuard endpoint, a Tor relay, a personal blog, or backups. Pick one and finish it before adding a second, so you always know what is running and why.

Where billing surprises hide

Because the model is a prepaid balance debited per cycle and there is no auto-renewal, you cannot be surprised by a recurring charge. The flip side is the opposite risk: if the balance reaches zero, the server is suspended. Keep a small buffer, and check the balance from the panel or the finance API when you log in.

FAQ

QHow long does deployment take?

ATypically one to two minutes after funding. The balance must be credited before a deploy will start.

QDo I need to verify my email?

ANo verification step exists. The account works immediately after signup and funding.

QWhat happens if my balance runs out?

AThe server is suspended until the balance is topped up. There is no automatic charge, because there is no card on file.

QCan I resize later?

AYes. Change-plan from the panel moves you between tiers, and the balance is debited per cycle.
