Changing plan, resizing or cancelling a server

How to move between VPS tiers, what happens to disk and IPs on a resize, how to cancel cleanly, and why this model has no auto-renewal to cancel.

Most of the awkwardness in hosting admin comes from upgrades, downgrades and cancellations. NoctisNode's balance model makes most of it simpler than a subscription, and this guide covers what actually happens in each case.

Changing plan

Change plan from the panel and the new tier applies from the next cycle boundary. There is no prorated mid-cycle charge, so an upgrade does not produce a surprise invoice and a downgrade does not require a credit calculation.

  • ▹Up for more CPU or RAM → pick the next tier up.
  • ▹Down because the workload shrank → pick the tier down; the change applies next cycle.
  • ▹Wrong plan chosen by mistake → change it; nothing is billed until the boundary.

What a resize does to your data

A tier change adjusts CPU, RAM and disk. Your disk contents and IP addresses are preserved across the change, so services that reference an IP keep working. Do reboot for the new core/RAM size to take effect — a plan change is not a live migration.

Note · Downgrading below what your data occupies can leave you with a filesystem that does not fit. Shrink your data or clean up first.

Moving to a dedicated server

If you have outgrown a VPS, dedicated servers start at $89 with Ryzen and EPYC hardware and ECC RAM. This is a different product, not a tier change: you deploy a new machine, migrate your data, then destroy the old server.

Cancelling — there is nothing to cancel

This is the honest difference between our model and a subscription. There is no auto-renewal and no card on file, so there is no recurring charge to cancel and nothing to phone a retention team about. You simply stop topping up, and the balance stops being debited.

  1. 01.Stop topping up, and the balance stops being debited at the next cycle.
  2. 02.When you are actually finished, destroy the server from the panel.
  3. 03.The balance stops accruing for that server from the following cycle.

Note · That also means nothing renews automatically if you want to keep running: if the balance reaches zero, the server suspends at the cycle boundary. Destruction is the deliberate, separate step.

Before you destroy anything

  • ▹Take a backup and keep a copy off the machine.
  • ▹Move any data you will miss — destruction is not a soft delete.
  • ▹Revoke credentials and API keys that lived only on that box.
  • ▹Point DNS elsewhere first so you do not strand a domain.

FAQ

QDo I get prorated when I change plan?

ANo. The new price applies from the next cycle boundary — no mid-cycle charge or credit.

QDo I need to cancel a subscription?

ANo. There is no subscription and no auto-renewal. You are debited from a prepaid balance, so there is nothing recurring to cancel.

QWhat happens to my data on destroy?

AIt is gone. Back up and move anything you need first.

QCan I go from a VPS to a dedicated server?

AYes — deploy the dedicated machine and migrate. It is a separate deployment rather than an in-place tier change.
